Boston Fitness for Older Adults

Boston is full of local activities and fitness programs for people of all ages. If you and your loved one are looking for new ways to stay active, check out this quick list of local age-friendly fitness centers and programs.
Note: Always consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.
1. Boston Centers for Youth and Families
The Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) manage 36 facilities, including pools and community centers, across the city. Dedicated Senior Programs take place at each of these centers, hosting activities like:
- Line dancing
- Gardening
- Meditation
- Pickleball
- Walking Club
- Yoga

2. Boston Senior Centers
Looking for a dedicated space for older adults? The City of Boston Age Strong Commission hosts 4 Boston Senior Centers in East Boston, Brighton, Charlestown, and Dorchester. These facilities provide social spaces, exercise classes, arts, and more in several languages. Programming changes every month.
Some activities offered at Boston Senior Centers in September are:
- Chair yoga
- Tai Chi
- Low-impact aerobics
- Cornhole
- Dancing
- Joy walks
- Aqua aerobics

3. The Senior Pilot Center
The Senior Pilot Center in West Roxbury is a part-time senior center hosted by our fellow Aging Service Access Point, Ethos. Along with a community space to drink tea or coffee with new friends, they offer over 20 healthy aging programs such as chair yoga and stretching classes.
Classes are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 AM – 3 PM. All programs are free of charge and open to the public. To learn more about current classes, call 617-522-6700 and ask for the Senior Pilot Center.
4. Boston Parks Fitness Series
The City of Boston Department of Parks and Recreation holds free fitness programming in several Boston parks. Though the summer fitness series just ended, interest checks for the Fall Fitness Series are open, with programming running from October to mid-November.

5. Age Strong Events and Engagement for Older Adults
The Age Strong Commission hosts free activities, programs, and community engagement events for older adults aged 55 and older around the city and in local community centers.
Some current programs include:
- Bowling League
- Zumba
- Yoga
- Dance Classes
- Park walks
Other highlights include the annual Mayor’s Walk, Anniversary Celebration, and Senior First Night.

6. YMCA Healthy Aging
Last but not least, the YMCA of Greater Boston offers over 300 group exercise and water exercise classes each week for older adults through their Healthy Aging Program. Some examples of classes designed for older adults are:
- Aqua arthritis
- Stretching and meditation
- Diabetes prevention program
- Healthy habits class
The YMCA of Greater Boston has centers in:
- Burbank
- Charlestown
- Huntington Ave.
- Hyde Park (Thomas M. Menino YMCA)
- Roxbury
- West Roxbury (Parkway Community YMCA)
- Waltham
- Chinatown (Wang YMCA)
Though a YMCA membership is needed to enjoy these classes, most YMCA locations offer discounted memberships for older adults. Some insurance plans also include monthly fitness club membership dues that can help cover YMCA membership fees.
